Whistler Courses open for the 2009 Season!

This weekend in Whistler brought beautiful sunny skies, and the opening of all of the Whistler area golf courses. Big Sky Golf & Country Club, located 30 minutes north of Whistler in the Pemberten valley has been open since mid-April, and is already in great shape.
Nicklaus North Golf Course, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Course and the Whistler Golf Club all opened up on May 7th, and enjoyed fantastic weather for the opening weekend.
The season kicks off in earnest over the next week, with the back-to-back long weekends that will attract the golfers back to the most scenic golf courses in Canada.
All of the Whistler-area courses have first-rate practice faclities, available for use prior to your paid round of golf, and lessons are also available at all of the courses.

IAGTO Dominican Republic Fam Trip

Shelley Quinn, owner of Eagle Tours located in Whistler, BC, just returned from another highly sucessful and fruitful IAGTO Super-Fam trip to the Dominican Republic.
Eagle Tours was one of approximately 40 International Tour Operators who was hosted at the event, with Tour Operators and Travel Writers from over 18 countries in attendance.
The first day, the group stayed at the Majestic Colonial or Majestic Elegance Hotel in Punta Cana. The hotel put on a fantastic welcome dinner on the beach, with entertainment and a fantastic meal.Ed Holofcener & Shelley Quinn
On the following morning, April 26th, the group was up early for the short ride to the Punta Blanca Golf Course for a round of golf, followed by lunch, and a site inspection of the newly constructed Moon Palace Punta Cana. With a new 18 hole golf course slated to open in January 2010, this property is like a small town in itself, with over 1,800 rooms, several restaruants, and expansive grounds.
On April 27th, the group headed across to La Romana, to Casa de Campo, home of the famous Dye designed Teeth of the Dog & Dye Fore courses. Fab foursome on Teeth of the Dog Since its’ opening, the Teeth of the Dog has consistently been ranked as one of the top 50 courses in the world.
The Casa de Campo Hotel had lots of charm, and we dined at Altos de Chavon, with beautiful views over the Chavon river.
The following day, we set off back to Punta Cana to play the newly opened . Roco Ki Golf Faldo Legacy Course With the Starwod Westin property slated to open in late 2010. The course is a combination of stunning ocean views, tropical mangrove forests & sea grass meadows - and it is very expansive. Sebastian Prado from Argentina on the 17th hole
Following golf, the group transfered to the Melia Caribe Tropical Hotel in time for a late dinner and bed!
Day 5, we had the delightful experience of visiting the Punta Cana Resort & Club, and touring Tortuga Bay Hotel prior to teeing off at 1:30pm at La Cana, yet another breathtaking Dominican Course. Following the round, we dined back at Tortuga Bay and were treated to more excellent food, drink and entertainment.
Day 6, another Hotel move, this time to the luxurious paradisus Palma Real Hotel in Punta Cana, staying in 'The Reserve', with fantastic spacious rooms, beautiful swimming pool and beach areas, and traditional Carribean service.
The last round of the trip for me was the most impressive... Punta Espada, the Nicklaus Designed course that many say is his best...This was a long round, but every hole offered a new breathtaking vista. On the final day, many of the group played a 6th and final round at Cocotel Golf Course, and others (myself included) opted for a well-deserved beach day.
Our final Gala Dinner was held at the paridisus Punta Cana, where various awards were presented. Congratulations to Chis Guerny, winner of the overall tournament!

Whistler Golf Season Around the Corner

Every year at this time, like bears waking up after a long winter slumber, the greens of the golf courses are cleared of snow. It is the true sign that spring is just around the corner.

If removing snow off the greens is not something you can imagine you must live somewhere warm, or even hot. And if it's hot now, it must get really hot in July and August! Guillevin International Whistler Golf Trip

Guillevin Burnaby hosted a great weekend in Whistler from September 12 to the 14th, staying at the Summit Lodge. Some of the group arrived early on Friday and enjoyed a round of golf at Big Sky Golf & Country Club prior to the 'official' event.
The rest of the group arrived on Friday, and had dinner and drinks at the Summit prior to heading out to explore the nightlife (a few apparently stayed on to close Buffalo Bills! - they weren't looking so spritely on the golf course on Saturday!)
On Saturday the group played at Nicklaus North Golf Course. Eagle Tours was on hand for moral support and to offer scotch, but there weren't many takers - particularly by those who closed Buffalo Bills on the previous evening!

After another night of dining and drinking, the final round was played on Sunday at the Whistler Golf Course.
All in all, I think that a great time was enjoyed by all, thanks to the great organizing by John Martin of Guillevin Burnaby.
We hope to see you all back in Whistler again next year!!

Whistler Highway Reopens

The Sea to Sky Highway connecting Whistler and Vancouver has reopened. After a large rock slide and four days of closure this was a welcome announcement.

Normal deliveries of goods has resumed. Whistler Resort remained open for business as travelers, including Eagle Tours clients chose to arrive via float plane or helicopter.

Eagle Tours teamed up with Harbour Air to help some of our guests travel from Victoria to Whistler. The incredibly scenic flight took approximately one hour from Victoria to Whistler flying over the Georgia Straight and Howe Sound then passing through the Coast Mountains and finally landing at the Green Lake float plane dock.

Rocky Mountaineer - Fraser Discovery Route

During the last weekend in May, I was lucky enough to experience the unforgettable Fraser Discovery Route on board the .Rocky Mountaineer.
We set-off from Whistler bright and early, on a cloudless Saturday morning. The weather was perfect to enjoy the splendour of the mountains, lakes and endless blue sky - truly the best that BC has to offer.

I experienced the luxurious GolfLeaf service on board the train, and settled back for a day of breathtaking scenery, gourmet food (and lots of it!) and great company, along with 20 Travel Agents from the Pacific Northwest.
We left my home town of Whistler and travelled through Pemberton and then along the shorelines of Anderson and Seton lakes.

The day was full of informative commentary from our hostesses, trips down to the dining car for scrumptious meals, viewing on the back of the car from the observation deck, and just relaxing in the comfort of GoldLeaf Service.

We ended the day in Quesnel, and overnighted at the Sandman Hotel. A few of us made the trip to downtown Quesnel, and visited the casino (I won $60!!), and then the local pub, which had some great entertainment.
The next day, bright and early we boarded the train again for more stunning scenery and great gastronomic experiences... through the Continental divide, past Mount Robson, the higest peak in the Canadian Rockies (12,972 feet), and ending in the town of Jasper.

Whistler Golf Club - Palmer's Design. Whistler's Attitude

Whistler resort is home to 4 fantastic golf courses. Today I had the pleasure of playing the original - Arnold Palmer's Whistler Golf Club. The course is in fantastic shape and, even with the cool spring we've had, the greens were playing quickly. The fairways were perfect and the rough was thick and well, rough!

The unobstructed panoramic views of Whistler, Blackcomb, Fissile and Wedge mountains are breathtaking.

We played a sunset round, teeing off at 6:19 pm and played 15 holes easily! When we hit 18 the clubhouse was glowing in the distance and the last of the pink alpenglow sky was melting into inky midnight blue.

Can't wait to get out there and play again soon!

Ahh - summer has arrived in Whistler, and the golf courses are shaping up nicely.
Eagle Tours owners Shelley Quinn and Debbie Lacroix took some time out of the office on Friday to head up to Big Sky Golf & Country Club ,and enjoyed a perfect summer's day on the course.
Big Sky is in fantastic shape - the recent sunshine combined with the inevitable showers of the West Coast are working magic on the fairways & greens.

The owners of Eagle Tours are always kept busy throughout the summer months, taking care of our clients visiting our fantastic golf resorts in British Columbia and Quebec. But enough is enough - all work and no play does NOT improve the golf game... so... this summer we have decided to take a bit of time out of the office to improve our skills on the links. Our whole family have caught the bug, and we are all fortunate enough to be participating in the golf clinics run in Whistler by the Whistler Golf Club.

After only a couple of lessons, Zoe and Jade are really starting to get the 'swing' of things - and are asking to visit the range to hit balls... no bad for a couple of 5 & 6 year olds.

IAGTO mid-year Convention - Coastal South Carolina

Eagle Tours' owner, Shelley Quinn recently attended the second annual IAGTO mid-year convention in Myrtle Beach and Charleston area, South Carolina.

On day one, we were warmly welcomed by Gary Edwards and his fantastic team and cohorts from Coastal South Carolina at the Marina Inn at Grand Dunes

The newly opened Marina Inn is a fantastic location for golfers, with the Resort Course at Grand Dunes at your doorstep, and a short hotel-shuttle from the beautiful expansive beach that has made Myrtle Beach famous.
On Sunday the group split and played 3 courses - I was on the Links style True Blue Course and just loved the 'Southern' feel of this course, which was built on a former rice and indigo plantation.
On Monday the group travelled to Barefoot Resort and split into groups once again. I played the Dye Course , and managed to hit every sand trap on the course (and there are a lot of them!!

On Tuesday I was lucky enough to play the Grand Dunes Course for the IAGTO Tournament with Hotel Manager Jim Powalie and Harriss D'Antignac from River Hills golf & Country Club. My game wasn't on this day, but luckily my playing partners were extremely good natured (the bloody mary's didn't hurt either!).

Wednesday it was on to the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island
I would like to send a huge 'Thank You' to our caddie, Jeremy, who sorted out my swing at the practice facility and helped me to really enjoy the course. This course was definitely the highlight for me - especially since I was prepared to lose a dozen balls to the alligators, and only lost two!

After relaxing on the plantation-style terrace we headed to view the impressive Sanctuary Hotel on Kaiwah Island and then to an authentic Oyster Roast and BBQ at Mingo Point.
We stayed for the next 2 nights in Charleston at the historic, >Mills House Hotel in the heart of the city.

Following this round, we had a fantastic lunch by the sea, courtesy of Wild Dunes Resort.

The trip was a roaring success, with all 50 Operators from 18 countries leaving with a wonderful impression of Coastal South Carolina, and waiting to take the good news back to our clients.

I'm certain that the ladies will never forget the 'Dark side of Charleston' tour with the convincigly creepy tour-guide...
And last but not least, we got to do the historic bike ride around Charleston (with a quick stop at Saks 5th Avenue of course!)... no fam trip can be really complete without exploring the area, seeing the historic sites, and doing a bit of shopping!!!

Mighty Mountain Golf in Whistler

I've been reading the December 2007 issue of Fairways and Greens Magazine. It's a nice glossy issue with a knock out, cage match theme called 'Best of the West'.

In one of the undercard matches we have Whistler Resort vs Mammoth. While both resorts put a series of 9 and 10 ratings on the card, Whistler was ahead with a final score of 97 out of 100.

Cozumel - Post-IGTM fam trip

Immediately following the busy 4 days of the IGTM, about 50 Tour Operators from around the world went on to experience the delights of the Island of Cozumel - so close to the mainland, but really a world apart...
Our host on Cozumel was Mr. Benny Campos, the General Manager of the Jack Nicklaus designed lub Cozumel Country C. Benny was a fantastic host in every way, somehow managing to herd 50+ Tour operators, (many whom suffered from hangovers & lack of sleep!) onto a Ferry, and then into various hotels on the Island.
I was staying at El Cozumeleno Beach Resort, located on a beautiful stretch of beach, right across the street from the golf course (great views of the course from the entrance of my room on the 9th floor).

On the first evening, all of the guests were treated to dinner at the neighbouring Playa Azul Hotel, a family run, very quaint hotel with real charm.
The following day, the group played golf at the Cozumel Country Club, and were treated to a truely unique layout and great wildlife! resident of Cozumel Country Club
After golf, there were of course the obligatory drinks and prizes to give out...

A few of us decided to try the sport that Cozumel is really known for... Scuba diving. For me it had been about 10 years (or more) since I had been diving, and for my companians from the Czech Republic, it was their first time, so we started out with a crash course from the staff at .Pro-Dive Mexico in the swimming pool, followed by a 40 minute dive. For our final night on Cozumel, we were treated to perhaps the best dinner of our trip in Mexico, at the Wyndham Resort Cozumel The atmosphere was perfect, and much care had gone into the set-up for this grand finale dinner. It was a great evening to finish off the trip and to say goodbye to new & old friends and associates.
Until the next event, that is all my news. I am now home in Whistler, Canada's #1 Golf Resort (which is currently covered in over 100cms of snow!). The courses here are due to open in May... until then, the courses will be used by local residents (myself included) for cross-country skiing... maybe next time I head out I'll snap some photos of the courses covered in white stuff...
Thanks to all of the Hotels, golf courses and restaurants in Cancun, the Mayan Riviera and Cozumel who hosted the Tour Operators for this 10th Anniversary IGTM event. I hope that the area sees tremendous growth in it's golf product - there are certainly choices for every type of traveller.

IGTM Cancun Dec 3 - 6, 2007

After the pre-fam tour of 4 days of golfing in the Mayan Riviera, it was time for the real work to begin: the IGTM 2007.
Over 500 participants played golf in the annual IGTM Golf Tournament, hosted at various courses throughout the Cancun area. While some were playing in the tournament, other delegats attended the IGTM Golf Clinic hosted at the Hilton Golf Club in Cancun. I was lucky enough to get a private golf lesson from a visiting pro from Germany (Thank you Harald!)at the impressive Fairmont Cameleon driving range & learning facility. Following my lesson, I moved back into Cancun to the Hilton Cancun Golf & Spa Resort , and had a great room with a balcony overlooking the sea and the vast swimming pool.

On the evening of the 3rd, the IGTM hosted the Welcome Reception in a funky outdoor venue looking over the sea, the Flamingo Boardwalk. This was a great spot to meet up with old business associates and enjoy a Corona (or 2). The following day, the Cancun Convention Centre was packed with exibitors from all over the world, all busy with appointments from Golf Tour Operators interested in expanding to new destinations and expand contracts with existing ones.
I visited many of the exibitors from the Mayan Riviera, and our golf clients will soon be seeing all of my personal favorite golf courses and hotels for offer on our www.eagletours.com website. We plan to be selling golf package to the Mayan Riviera and Cozumel in early 2008, so be sure to visit our site early in the new year.

Wednesday followed with another day of appointments for all, and there were plenty of new contracts and new destinations discovered for many of the attending Tour Operators. On Wednesday evening, a group of Operators were treated to a delicious dinner at the fabulous Westin Cancun, hosted by the Starwood properties in attendance at the IGTM. Starwood.com

Finally, day 4 of the IGTM was a bit quieter in the Convention Centre - many buyers had most of their appointments completed, and elected to spend a few well-deserved hours with their toes in the sand, testing out the azure waters of the Carribean.
The IAGTO Awards Gala Dinner was hosted at the Gran Melia Cancun, and the meal and ceremony went off without a hitch. Many headed off to the after party at Margaritaville...I have no comments or photo-evidence on this party, as I headed straight back to get some well-deserved sleep! I had to be ready for the post-fam trip the following morning, heading bright & early to Cozumel... more on that adventure in my next update...

IAGTO Cancun fam trip - Mayan Riviera

I have just returned from my 3rd IGTM , held in Cancun, Mexico, and I am trying to adjust back to the Canadian climate.
I was fortunate enough to participate in the IAGTO pre and post fam trips. The pre-fam included golf at three fantastic golf courses located along the Mayan Riviera: El Camaleon Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman and managed by the Fairmont. I stayed for a couple of nights at the ultra-luxurious Fairmont Mayakoba Resort The service was exceptional, and the resort layout is unique. With various modes of transportation to get around (boat, bicyle and shuttle), there is no excuse not to get out and try all of the fantastic restaurants, pool areas and hotel facilities.

Another great course, Iberostar's Playa Pariso designed by PB Dye will challenge any level of golfer.
The newly opened
Grand Hotel Paraiso is an adult-only five star all-inclusive property that should satisfy the most discerning guest. I didn't get the opportunity to stay here (this time!) - but had the tour, and it certainly looks impressive and grand.

Finally, on our third day we golfed at Moon Palace . Set on the Mayan Riviera at the Moon Palace, this Nicklaus Signature Design, 7,165 yard, par-72, course is a true championship golf course that surpasses even the highest standards set by Palace Resorts. The day was HOT, but thanks to the frequent visits of the beverage cart (and the fact that it was 'all inclusive'), lots of cool beverages were consumed, and everyone stayed happy...There were even a few alligator spottings, which raised a few eyebrows (and certainly kept me well away from the water!).

Whistler's Cornucopia

It’s that time of year again in Whistler… the leaves have fallen off the trees, the snow is falling on the tops of the mountains, and all thoughts have turned to food & drink.

Yes – it is Cornucopia – one of the finest food & wine festivals in the Northern Hemisphere. Now in it’s 11th year, this festival of indulgence just keeps getting better.

With an amazing selection of gourmet foods, paired with great wines from all over the globe, this is truly a foodie’s delight.

On Friday, I was fortunate enough to attend two great events. Firstly, Mission Hills spa & tasting event,partnered with my favorite spa in Whistler, Solarice Wellness Spa.
Members of the press & VIP’s were treated to mini-spa treatments (just enough to make them want more), while sampling some of Mission Hill’s finest wines.

Following this tasting, I attended ‘CRUSH’ – featuring food from 15 of the top restaurants & catering companies in Whistler, and 75 wineries from all over the world.
Of course, I tried sampling as much as possible, but in such a short time, it was all but impossible to try everything.

For the rest of the weekend, there are wine seminars, pairing dinners, gala parties and the ‘mini-tasting’ series.

After this weekend, everyone in Whistler is waiting eagerly for the mountains to open – just 2 more weeks to go. Looks like we got quite a dump of snow on the top half of the mountain last night – so I’m looking forward to opening day…

Also just a couple of weeks until the IGTM in Cancun, Mexico. This is an annual event put on by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, and promises to be a great time for making business connections and having lots of fun!

Final days in Argentina

On Thursday the 25th came our trip to visit the first and only (so far) Jack Nicklaus designed course in South America, Chapelco Golf and Resort. Located close to the charming mountain town of San martin de los Andes, this Nicklaus Course absolutely lives up to the name of the designer. Despite being open for only a few months, the course was in great shape, and we were treated to a lunch and introduction by the owner of the property, whose family has owned the land since the early 1800’s. In addition to golf, the resort offers a luxury fishing lodge alongside one of the best fly-fishing rivers in the region, and miles of uninhabited terrain for hiking, biking and horseback riding. There is a Loi Suites Hotel that is due to open in December 2007, which will offer guests luxurious accommodations right along the golf course, and only a few minutes from the town of San Martin de los Andes.

On the following day, the group got to experience at least a part of the scenic ‘7 lakes’ (Tres Parquest Siete Lagos) – with a fantastic guide from the National Park to provide history and explain local flora & fauna. Due to rain, we didn’t get to see the full route, but did see enough to understand why this route is famous for its incredible vistas of lakes, mountains, rivers and unending beauty. The group had a few hours to explore the town of Bariloche – a lively town that reminded my somehow of a cross between Chamonix, France and Queenstown, New Zealand. In spite of being ‘between’ seasons (winter & summer), the town was brimming with activity, with a very international feeling. People of all ages and nationalities were wandering through the shops and strolling along the walkway along the lake. A couple of us even found an antiquated skating rink, housed in a building jutting out over the lake. For 20 pesos, we rented skates and wobbled around the rink (the skates had not been sharpened for months, if not years!). This was one way to feel like a ‘local’, as I am certain that we were the only tourists on the rink, sharing the ice with mainly Argentine youth practicing their ‘ice-tango’.

After the flight back to Buenos Aires, we were whisked away to a highly professional Tango show at Esquina de Carlos Gardel. The show was fantastic, very sensual and professional, and everyone in the group was ready to hit the dance floor out on the town afterwards to a little practice!

Finally, the last night in Buenos Aires… To the gang of San Telmo…A few of the stragglers of the group had a night out ‘unescorted’ – the night before the election. San Telmo square showed us a great time, and a memorable final night in Buenos Aires.

On Tuesday, October 23, we set out to the National Airoport of Buenos Aires for our flight to Bariloche, the gateway to the mountainous region of Patagonia – one of the most breathtaking areas that I have ever visited (and I have been around mountains for most of my adult life). At the southernmost tip of continental Argentina, the Andean mountain range is truly magnificent, surrounded by forests, lakes and breathtaking glaciers.

In Bariloche, half of the group, including myself, were hosted at the Arelauquen Lodge – a truly welcoming and luxurious ‘boutique-style’ lodge with it’s own new 18-hole golf course, designed by Vicente Fernandez and Carlos Ordone. The course lies on the shore of Lake Gutierrez, and is surrounded by mountains, crystal clear lakes and streams (really, the clearest water I have ever seen!), and some stunning local architecture. The golf season lasts most of the season in Patagonia, although the main sport in this region from June to October is skiing at the nearby ‘Cathedral’ ski resort. The high season for golf begins in December, and lasts through to May – a perfect time for those in the Northern Hemisphere to escape winter and head to the links!!

On Wednesday, the group was hosted at the most magnificent golf course and resort that I have personally ever visited – Llao Llao Hotel and Resort. This hotel is a member of Luxury Hotels of the world, and has the services and surrounding to please the most experienced and discerning traveler. We first glimpsed the hotel from a viewpoint high above, and it truly looked like a majestic castle perched alongside the lake and nestled in the mountains. When we played this course, we had some bracing winds, and the lakes looked like the rolling sea – this only added to the element of ‘man against nature’, and so many times I found myself thinking ‘Wow – I am playing golf in Patagonia’. I was constantly running off to the side to enjoy extra views of the lakes and mountains (and of course to find my golf balls that had gone astray!!).
Following our round of golf, we were treated to some time at the Spa in Llao Llao, again, a first-class experience. Swimming in the indoor/outdoor pool, looking down at the lake and up at the mountains, I found myself again in a state of awe at the surroundings, and felt that I had truly found paradise!

Argentina Super Fam Golf Trip –

Myself and 19 other International Golf Tour Operators arrived in Buenos Aires to warm sunny skies on Sunday October 21 to experience a once-in-a-lifetime golf trip in Argentina… we were not to be disappointed…
The group was comprised of Operators from Denmark, the UK, German, Scotland, South Africa, USA, Finland, Belgium, Sweden, Canada, France and Portugal. All had come to Argentina for the first time, to experience the hospitality, and of course the golf courses of Argentina

Our itinerary, provided by the Tourism Board of Argentina, was packed full of sights, sounds, and golf for 7 action-packed days.

I was hosted for the first 2 nights along with about half of the group at the elegant Loi Suites Recoleta Hotel, located in the very lively Recoleta neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. (next to the cemetery where the infamous Evita is buried). On a Sunday, this area of the city is extremely vibrant, with large street markets and a feeling of festivity in the air. Following a tour of the city, exploring all of the different neighbourhoods of the city, I felt that I was in a combination of Barcelona, Paris, Naples and Mexico City!

So many sights and sounds – it would take weeks to discover all of what Buenos Aires has to offer, but we did our best to experience the most possible in a few short days.

The first evening we were hosted by the Alvear Palace Hotel – a truly elegant 5 star Hotel in the heart of Buenos Aires. After a fantastic private Tango show, we had a wonderful dinner and got a tour of this luxurious property with incredibly high standards of service.

Next morning at 6:30am, we were on a bus headed to one of Buenos Aires’ most prestigious golf courses, Olivos Golf Club. The members of the IAGTO fam trip were fortunate enough to be the only public players on the course this day, as the following day the Argentine Masters Tournament was taking place. The course is characterized by having a vast expanse of land with rolling topography and many old first-growh trees, (many of which I seemed to hit during the course of the round!)

The ‘Torneo de Maistros’ 2007 was won on October 27th for the 4th time in 5 tries by Angel Cabrera, who defeated former European Tour champion Ricardo Gonzalez in a playoff hole.

The afternoon round was played at Pilar Golf Club, also home to past Argentine Open Tournaments. Pilar is made up of 27 holes with many lakes and lagoons, surrounded by different landscapes with colours of nature all year round.

After our golf, we set off to visit a couple more of the prestigious golf courses in and around Buenos Aires, namely the Buenos Aires Golf Club (ranked the top course in Argentina by Golf Digest), and the Jockey Club, designed by Allister McKenzie - both ‘must play’ courses for any foreign visitor. (these courses must be booked through a golf Tour Operator as they are not traditionally open to the public).

Finally, at the end of the day, we set out for another great meal hosted by the Sheraton Buenos Aires Park Tower, a glorious high-rise hotel close to the newly re-developed port area of the city.
